david Beckham And Ferrari

Becks' garage may resemble the pit lane at Le Mans, but of all his sporty numbers this is thought to be his own personal favourite - and let's face it, he has always resembled nothing so much as a prancing horse.

Wayne Rooney And His First car

Image - Wayne Rooney's Sportka
He may now dash around in all manner of luxurious voitures ferrying Coleen around the shops, but when Rooney first made his name at Everton he was as proud as punch to get his first car - a Ford Sportka as nippy and full of youthful vigour as the Roon himself.

Michael Owen And His Jaguar

Image - Michael Owen's Jaguar XJ

Michael Owen and Jaguar have a lot in common. English, known all over the world, swift, and always good for the big occasion. However, of late Owen has been more like the Formula 1 Jaguars - lacking pace and unable to finish.

Thiery Hendry And His Mclaren Mercedes SLR

'Terry Henry' is one of the world's most speedy and stylish predators, and he evidently likes his cars to be elegant and snake-hipped too - both leave their rivals eating dust. But even Thierry has to work hard to create an opening for a parking space in Hampstead.

Owen Hargreaves BMW car

The Canadian-Welsh-German England international has made his name being versatile, and his choice of car reflects this very well - sporty but streetwise. He may find his BMW harder to keep hold of if he moves to Manchester rather than spend life in sunny Bavaria.

Wayne Rooneys 350.000 Pounds supercar...

Rooney's McClaren SLR Roadster

Motor-mad Wayne Rooney has splashed out £350,000 on a McLaren supercar with red leather seats.

The Manchester United striker, 22, took delivery of the exclusive edition SLR Roadster at his home in Cheshire.

Built by the F1 racing team, the dazzling silver convertible is one of the world's fastest motors with a top speed of 200mph. It will now take pride of place in his luxury fleet, which also includes a Bentley, Range Rover and Lamborghini. A source said: "The players are always trying to compete with each other over flash cars.

This will keep the others quiet for a bit."

BARCELONA

Valdes: 6
- Didn't have a save to make all night and only touched the ball when he plucked a few crosses from the air.

Alves: 8 - A constant threat down the right wing and defending reasonably well too. Capped off a fine performance with a great free-kick, his first goal for Barcelona since joining this summer. Has taken a while to settle in but now he has he is starting to reproduce the form that made him such a hit at Sevilla.

Puyol: 7 - Had very little to do all night after Negredo was sent off and a solid performance from the centre-back.

Márquez: 7 - Much like Puyol he wasn't tested all night but dealt with the long balls and rare attacks well.

Abidal: 8 - Linked up really well with Henry down the left flank and defending very well too. Good game from the Frenchman.

Xavi: 8 - Another great performance from the midfielder who always seems to be at the centre of all things good about Barcelona along with Iniesta. Controlled the game from the midfield and was a joy to watch.

Touré: 7 - Solid performance and will be pleased to be getting minutes under his belt. Nothing too spectacular from the Ivory Coast international but he provided good cover when the ball was lost by the front men.

Iniesta: 9 - How this man did not get a nomination for the Balon D'Or is a mystery. A simply brilliant player when on song as he was tonight and was at heart of nearly all the plays from the midfield. Some lovely balls and skills to take it around the keeper on more than one occasion. Only downside is he didn't get a goal!

Messi: 7 - Some nice trademark runs from the Argentine but didn't seem to be on top of his game with the final ball. Maybe a little tired after playing so much but still a good performance.

Henry: 7 - Starting to find his feet in this Barcelona side and he showed just why he was so highly rated at Arsenal with a lovely first touch flick then volley in the second half. Worked hard up and down the left and got a deserved goal by been in the right place.

Eto'o: 9 - Really starting to find some form now and even though none of his three goals were particularly breathtaking he was the man everyone was looking for when they were on the ball. The figurehead of the side and one of the best finishers in the world still, a marvellous player and seeming to be enjoying his football again.

Substitutes

Bojan: 6
- Few nice runs but nothing too special in a second half that lacked much excitement.

Hleb: 6 - Like Bojan he only played when the game was already won and couldn't provide too many memorable moments, although did show some nice touches and a decent turn of pace.

Sánchez: 6 - Hardly got any time but did what he had to do well enough.

ALMERÍA

Alves: 4
- At fault for a couple of goals and although he made a good save to deny Eto'o at the end he should have been more decisive with some of his goalkeeping.

Bruno: 5 - Got turned a few times but going forward looked decent and not a bad performance by the right-back.

García: 4 - Was caught out of position on too many occasions and didn't get tight enough to the forwards to prevent them turning and playing their passes.

Pellerano: 5- Like García was caught out and gave the opponents too much time but he did make some good tackles and in the second-half especially was very solid at the back.

Guilherme: 4 - A game of two halves for the left back. First forty-five he was turned inside out by the Barcelona forwards and couldn't get to grips with them at all. Second-half though he was much better and looked a threat going forward too.

Corona: 6- Not a bad performance from the midfielder and not many can live with Iniesta and Xavi when they are in such scintillating form. Could have been a bit better with his distribution at times maybe.

J. Ortíz: 4 - Had a few nice runs and shots but after Negredo was sent off he was playing too far forward and couldn't really get into the game a lot.

Álvarez: 5 - Like Corono he didn't play particularly badly but was just outdone by the class of the opponents. Wasteful with some possession, although he did improve second-half.

Soriano: 4- Did very little throughout the match except get himself booked for a very cynical challenge on Messi. Couldn't up with the pace of the game at times.

Crusat: 5 - One of the better forwards for Almería but when Negredo went off the game was effectively over from an attacking view for the visitors and he defended quite well when he had to.

Negredo: 4 - Was the main goal hope for Almería but saw red after just 29 minutes after a late tackle on Márquez. It was a harsh decision and up until then he had looked useful, especially in the air, but nevertheless a silly tackle.

Substitutes

Mané: 6
- Came on in the easier of the two halves for Almería and burst forward well on a few occasions and also looked solid at the back.

Natalio: 5 - Lost the ball on a few occasions but prefers to play up front with Negredo and looked out of position.

Ortiz: 6 - Decent enough three or four minutes, did nothing wrong and nothing particularly great.

JUVENTUS

Manninger: 6.0-
Was merely a pedestrian between the sticks tonight and did not see much action.

Molinaro: 6.0- No glaring mistakes and managed to push forward on a couple of occasions but the final product was poor.

Chiellini: 7.0- Took Bianchi completely out of the match and put him in his back pocket.

Legrottaglie: 7.0- Was solid at the back, made some vital blocks and was never caught out of position.

Grygera: 6.0- Put in a workmanlike effort before he had to be substituted because of a pulled muscle.

De Ceglie: 6.5- Did well in his makeshift role in the midfield with out any fuss.

Sissoko: 7.0- The tough tackling midfielder had two good chances in the first ten minutes and won the midfield battle.

Nedved: 7.0- Will be battered and bruised after being abused all evening long but showed his mettle with a gritty performance.

Marchionni: 6.0- Was foiled twice by Calderoni in the 20th minute but slowly disappeared as the match wore on.

Del Piero: 6.0- It was a fairly tame performance from the captain who failed to put his stamp on the match.

Amauri: 7.0- After a quiet first half, Amauri sprung to life with a good solo effort that won the derby for Juventus.

SUBS: Mellberg (46”) 6.0, Giovinco (62”) 6.5, Iaquinta (81”) NA

TORINO

Calderoni: 6.0- Made a world class double save on Marchionni in the first half but should have kept Amauri’s shot from finding the back of the net in the 47th minute

Di Loreto: 6.0- Amauri left him wallowing in the dust on his way to scoring the only goal of the match.

Natali: 6.0- He made two poor clearances in first ten minutes and never really settled into the match.

Pisano: 6.0- Defended the left flank fairly well and put together a decent performance.

Diana: 6.0- Fought hard in the midfield trenches tonight and dished out as much punishment as he received.

Barone: 6.0- Did a poor job keeping his emotions in check and felt it was necessary to harangue the referee after the match.

Zanetti: 5.5- Lost possession on numerous occasions tonight and will be disappointed with his performance.

Rubin: 5.0- Failed to make any sort of impression on the match and was substituted early in the second half.

Abate: 6.0- The speedy midfielder managed to make a nuisance of himself in the second half with some decent crosses.

Bianchi: 5.5- Missed a good chance when he failed to chip Manninger who was in no man’s land in the 34th minute but was invisible after that and was substituted in the second half.

Rosina: 6.0- Looked lively on the ball but the midfield maestro was kept in check by the Juventus back-four.

SUBS: Abbruscato (56”) 6.5, Amoruso (70”) 6.0, Ventola (82”) NA

Inter Milan vs Anorthosis famagusta 1-0, Champions League 2008

Inter Milan:

Francesco Toldo: 6.0 – If not for his one save, I would have written “n/a”. The retired Italian international was untested for nearly the entire match. I think I may have seen him set up a lawn chair in front of goal. Then again, the cameraman only turned far enough to show him for a moment.

Javier Zanetti: 7.0 – The Argentine international’s 35-year-old legs seem to never fail. Offensively, he did well to bring the ball forward, and he never failed to provide on the defensive end.

Ivan Cordoba: 7.5 –
One of the reasons why Toldo could have called in sick today without having any adverse effect on his team. Although he was rarely tested, he did his job, and well.

Cristian Chivu: 7.5 –
Another one of the reasons why Toldo could have called in sick today without having any adverse effect on his team. Like Cordoba, Chivu had little work to do, but was ever ready to help and made no mistakes.

Maicon: 7.0 –
His assist to Adriano won the match for Inter, and that alone earns him his rating. Would have earned a 7.5 if not for his terribly missed header on 3 minutes that could have saved Jose Mourinho’s nerves.

Sulley Ali Muntari: 7.0 –
The Ghanain international will be disappointed to have failed to score tonight. While his 49th minute open header was a poor effort, his 10th minute shot was only denied by an excellent save.

Esteban Cambiasso: 8.0 – Was content to stay back and pull the strings in central midfield. His efforts were enough to disrupt any of Anorthosis’ forward progress in the middle.

Dejan Stankovic: 7.5 – A solid performance from the Serbian. He effectively mediated Inter’s transitions from defense to offense, on many occasions providing good long-balls to the forwards.

Mancini: 5.0 –
Uninspired play from the Brazilian. Aside from a lazy 40-yard shot that missed by a mile, the left forward took no shots, and he only provided two decent crosses, neither of which resulted in goals. His only bright spot in the match was hardly his doing; he received a cross in the penalty area and, instead of volleying (a better idea), he passed back for Muntari to shoot.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: 5.5 – Active, but strikers are paid to score goals, and Ibra could not do just that. When he did run, he missed; refer to his missed 1-on-1 with the keeper on 68 minutes. Otherwise, he rather lazily settled for speculative long-ranged efforts.

Adriano: 8.0 – Scored a deserved winner and was the only real producer among an unimpressive Inter front line. His passing was inventive and, unlike his teammates, he actually threatened to score.

Subs

Ricardo Quaresma: 4.0 – Squandered his chance to prove something to Mourinho. A good performance from the Portuguese international following Mancini’s poor display could have earned him a starting role. He was even given a clear chance at goal in the 91st minute, but couldn’t control the ball. A disappointment.

Julio Cruz: n/a

Nicolas Burdisso: n/a

Anorthosis Famagusta:

Arjan Beqaj:7.5 – I can’t believe I’m saying this, but, like Toldo, Beqaj was hardly tested. Inter managed just four shots on goal the entire match, and Beqaj saved three. Adriano’s goal was no fault of Beqaj’s, and the Albanian delivered when it came to positioning himself and knocking away dangerous balls.

Jeffrey Leiwakabessy: 5.5 – The good: he didn’t mess up badly. The bad: his positioning was often questionable at best. Because Inter attacked on their left, Leiwakabessy had fewer opportunities to make plays or be beaten, so he earns a rating higher than that of his right-lying counterpart.

Andreas Constantinou: 4.0 – Should have cost his team a penalty kick in the 42nd minute with an unnecessary hand-ball in his own penalty area, but benefited from the referees’ mercy. Otherwise, the Cypriot was poorly positioned and lacked aggression inside his own penalty area.

Nicos Katsavakis: 4.0 – Like Constantinou, was poorly positioned in his own penalty area, and was outclassed by the clever Adriano. Had a great chance to bring Anorthosis back into the match, but his 46th minute free header was off-target.

Predrag Ocokoljic: 4.0 – Went forward too much. With Constantinou and Katsavakis having such great difficulty dealing with Ibrahimovic and Adriano, it was really unnecessary for the Serbian to make such a great commitment on the offensive end, especially if he didn’t deliver any support, save two blocked shots.

Vincent Laban: 5.0 – Provided just about as much offensively as anyone else on his team, firing a wild 35-yard shot off target and assisting a missed header following a corner.

Traianos Dellas: 6.0 – One of the more active Anorthosis players, Dellas won himself several free kicks, and effectively linked with his teammates on the offensive end. His fourth minute free kick was excellent and nearly gave Anorthosis a surprise lead early in the match.

Sinisa Dobrasinovic: 4.5 –
As a defensive midfielder, it was his responsibility to cut off Inter’s attack before the Italians reached their attacking third. This Dobrasinovic failed to do.

Cedric Bardon: 4.5 – Mostly anonymous, and unable to hold off Inter’s relentless attack on the left flank.

Bortolini Savio: 5.0 –
Found Katsavakis among a sea of Inter defenders in the 46th minute on a play that should have seen Anorthosis claim the equalizer. Was more active in the first half than the second, and was visibly fatigued in the closing minutes.

Lukasz Sosin: 5.0 –
It wasn’t his fault that, every time he got the ball, he was dispossessed by two world-class centre-backs. Sosin worked hard, but didn’t have enough left in him to run out for the second half.

Subs

Hawar Mulla Mohammed: n/a. Yes, he played for half the match, but I don’t recall him being involved in anything significant, or even touching the ball.

Klimenti Tsiatishvili: n/a

Nikolaos Frousos:

Steau Bucharest vs Lyon 3-5, Champions League 2008

STEAUA BUCHAREST

Zapata-5.0

Diffcult to say he had a good game when he conceded 5, but was often left stranded by his incompetent defenders. Made a few competent saves but this will be a night he'd doubtless rather forget.

Ogararu-4.5

Broke forward well at times, but was largely innocuous as the game wore on. This was not really a night for defenders after all, and the former Ajax man will want to forget it, one suspects, as soon as possible.

Radoi-5.0

Another player who will go home frustrated. A captain who led by example at times, tackling strongly and winning his headers, but he must take a share of the considerable blame for the way in which Lyon carved his side up towards the end. A centre-back who is also skipper must help to organise his comrades and he certainly didn't do that when Benzema volleyed home.

Marin-4.0

Largely anonymous, but, like his colleagues, must take a share of the blame for Lyon's goals. Contributed little once Lyon had got a grip on things and his marking for the set-pieces was as bad as anyone's.

Goian-6.0

Took his chance well, finishing from a corner with a strong header. Like the others though, was guilty of some pretty ordinary defending at the other end of the park-which is where he's meant to earn his living.

Petre-6.5

Showed good aerial prowess for his goal and worked hard throughout the game, showing good trength and commitment. Faded like his team mates as the game progressed though and was replaced by Ghionea.

Lovin-6.0

Made some useful clearances and tackled well, but became anonymous as the Lyon midfield took control of the game. Replaced by Kapetanos as Steaua sought in vain for goals at the end.

Moreno-7.0

Had an effective game in attack, looking from time to time Steaua's most threatening player. Struggled to produce anything of real quality when Steaua needed it though, and must have been left very frustrated by the result.

Nicolita-8.0

A real threat from out wide, producing quality delivery from the right hand side both from open play and from set-pieces. His crossing was world-class at times and he will be left wondering just what else he could have done to try and win the game.

Arthuro-7.5

Started well, scoring from a corner in the first few minutes. Another who became harder to find as the game wore on, however, and he did not produce the goods at the end of the game when it was needed. A good performance though.

Semedo-6.0

Sweated and toiled and occasionally linked well with Arthuro and Moreno. Produced little as the game wore on though, and was replaced by Toja Vega in the second half.

Subs:

Ghionea-5.0, Vega-5.5, Kapetanos-5.0

LYON

Lloris-7.0

Despite the fools playing just in front of him, he kept goal competently, catching crosses and making necessary saves. He's fortunate though: on another night it wouldn't just have been three flying past him.

Revellere-6.5

Must take a share of the blame for some awful defending, but contributed well in attack, getting down the flank effectively at times. Showed a solidity and physical approach to the game that vame in useful with a liberal referee.

Boumsong-4.0

A terrible performance from a defender who has not improved since his time at Newcastle. Showed no leadership and no organisational skills, his marking was awful and for much of the time seemed content to watch whilst others did the work. Puel must be thankful for the quality forwards he's got if this is his best centre-back.

Cris-4.0

Also dreadful at the back. The Brazillian seemed to have no positional sense and was guilty, just like Boumsong, of ball watching too often. If Lyon want to improve in Europe then they must find better quality at the back than this.

Grosso-6.5

Like the others, must take his share of the blame for some dreadful defending, but marauded forward usefully at times. Provided the cross for Benzema's goal, which deserves praise, and occasinally showed glimpses of his pedigree.

Makoun-6.0

Was largely anonymous in midfield as the game flowed around him. Seemed to find it hard to get his foot on the ball, but allowed those around him to flourish.

Juninho-8.5

An excellent performance. Probed and teased the Steaua defence with skill and trickery, hardly wasting a pass. His delivery from set-pieces was world class. A true playmaker.

Toulalan-7.5

Worked really hard and showed pasion and fight when his side needed it. Drove forward and produced a moment of sublime skill for the lay-back for Fred's first goal.

Ederson-7.0

Another neat and tidy performer who used the ball well and allowed the talent around him to flourish.

Keita-8.0

A good performance. Showed threat from the wide areas and took his goal well, pulling off a volley that showed good technique. In many ways, unlucky to be substituted, but I'm sure he'll have little complaint about what his replacement achieved.

Benzema-9.0

A fantastic striker's performance. Took his goals well and looked dangerous throughout, even though he was fortunate to face some bad defending. His combination with Juninho looks deadly at times and no one will enjoy playing against him when he's in this kind of form.

Subs:

Fred-9.0, Kallstrom-5.0

Duel Triller Full Attacking Football...

cuplikan pertandingan sepakbola liga champions 2008, Bayern Munich vs Fiorentina 3-0

Bayern:

Rensing-7.0: The Bayern keeper wasn’t overly tested with saves to make tonight. He looked a little uncertain coming for crosses, but did produce an excellent save to deny Felipe Melo in the first half.

Oddo-7.0: Oddo had a solid game against his fellow countrymen. He combined well with Bastian Schweinsteiger down the right and generally did well against a lively Adrian Mutu.

Lahm-6.5: The full back was quiet by his standards and was forced off at half time to be replaced by fellow local-boy Christian Lell. The full back must have picked up a knock.

Lucio- 7.0: The commanding Brazilian had a good game alongside Martin Demichelis as they shut out the combined danger of Mutu and Gilardino.

Demichelis-7.5: Played well in defence alongside Lucio, and could well have scored in the second half with a bullet header, only to be denied by Frey.

van Bommel-7.0: He’s back in the side and back playing well. The Dutch captain provided the shield in front of the Bayern back four which allowed the others to get forward. An under-stated role tonight, yet important. No yellow card either!

Zé Roberto-7.5: The in-form Brazilian had a quiet first half, but came more into it in the second period. He produced a fantastic left foot finish right at the end to seal the 3-0 win.

Schweinsteiger-8.0: ‘Schweini’ came out all fired-up and showed he was willing to have a pop at goal from all angles. He scored a great goal to make it 2-0 and was unlucky to be taken off in the second half.

Ribéry-7.5: Like Zé Roberto, he had a quiet first half, but came more to life in the second. He took a heavy knock resulting in a black eye, but seemed to spark into life as a result.

Toni-7.5: A mixed night for the former Viola man. He provided the assists for both Bayern’s opening two goals, but was then forced off in the second half with what looked like a repetition of his rib injury from the weekend.

Klose-8.0: The German striker produced a great finish to hand Bayern the lead and led the line well all night. He was always playing off the shoulder of the last defender and was a constant threat throughout the 90 minutes.

Substitutes:

Lell- 6.5: Lell slotted in quite nicely for Lahm when he had to go off providing a seemless transition.

Podolski- 5.0: Given a chance following Luca Toni’s injury, but didn’t really find his feet in the game.

Borowski: n/a

Fiorentina:

Frey-7.5: To have conceded three goals is a little harsh on the French keeper. He produced a fantastic save to deny Demichelis in the second half and cannot be blamed for any of the Bayern goals.

Zauri-6.5: The right back was quiet and penned largely back with Ribéry to deal with.

Vargas-6.5: The normally swashbuckling full back was, like counterpart Zauri, a little subdued and mainly preoccupied with containing Schweinsteiger.

Gamberini-6.5: Tough in the tackle but allowed Bayern through three times.

Dainelli-6.5: Will be disappointed to have conceded three goals tonight, but generally did well against former team mate Luca Toni.

Felipe Melo-7.0: He produced a fantastic mazy run and shot in the first half, which deserved a goal. He was however denied by Rensing and failed to reproduce a similar threat in the second period.

Kuzmanovic-7.5: He was lively throughout the game and unleashed plenty of shots, but unfortunately none unduly tested Rensing.

Montolivio-8.0: The U-21 international was the bright spark in the midfield for Fiorentina- especially in the first half. His clever passes probably deserved a goal as a reward.

Santana-6.5: Of the three front men deployed by Cesare Prandelli, he had the quietest night. Partners Mutu and Gilardino caused more trouble and his set-piece delivery was poor.

Mutu-8.0: He ran and ran and had the majority of the Viola’s efforts on goal. On a normal occasion his efforts would have resulted in a goal, but it just wasn’t to be tonight.

Gilardino-7.0: Gilardino had one great opportunity to get on the score sheet but couldn’t convert. Nevertheless a good all-round attacking display to remind non-Italian watchers of his talents.

Substitutes:

Jovetic: Showed some nice touches, but unable to turn the game.

Gobbi: Picked up a booking as the only highlight of his cameo appearance.

Bayern Perpanjang Nafas Klinsman...

Susunan Pemain:

Bayern Munich: Rensing, Oddo, Lahm (Lell 46), Lucio, Demichelis, van Bommel, Ze Roberto, Schweinsteiger (Borowski 65), Ribery, Toni (Podolski 57), Klose

Fiorentina: Frey, Zauri, Gamberini, Dainelli, Vargas (Gobbi 74), Felipe Melo, Kuzmanovic, Montolivo, Santana (Jovetic 65), Gilardino, Mutu

FENERBAHCE

Volkan: 5.5 -
Made some okay saves and collected some crosses but will be yelling explicit diction at his awful defence who allowed play to develop too often in front of them. Got a touch on Walcott's goal, but it was not heavy enough to put the pacey winger off his stride. Conceded five.

Carlos: 6.5 -
Considering his legs are aging those tree trunk thighs of his still did him proud as he roamed forward well, but Walcott got the better of him on the flank he was patrolling. A clever dinked volley was worthy of a goal should it have been on target.

Lugano: 5.0 -
Shameful marking and allowed Arsenal to free flow with their passing. Was slow to close down.

Edu: 5.5 -
Was guilty along with Gokhan of leaving too much space for Diaby's goal. Misplaced passing.

Gokhan: 7.0 -
Got forward well. Had the better of Samir Nasri for most of the game. Was guilty of some slack passing though.

Ugur: 6.5 -

Selcuk: 7.0 -
A tyrant of a tackler and was eventually booked for his heel snapping. Was a danger to Arsenal's stranglehold on the game.

Alex: 7.0 -
Whipped in a good free kick that had enough height on it to cause problems for Arsenal's defence but Almunia handled admirably. Threatened with some good crossing and passing.

Maldonado: 6.0 -
Made a number of fouls and was presumably replaced because Aragones did not want to compete against an in form Arsenal side with one less man.

Guiza: 8.0 -
Fener's best player, by far. His pace got the better of Arsenal's backline on numerous occasions. Was good for his side's second goal. Deserved his name on the scoresheet for a similar dink to Carlos' earlier effort, but on the half-volley.

Semih: 7.5 -
Along with Guiza he asked questions of the Gunners, and was one of Fenerbahce's better players on the night.

Substitutes:

Bilgin: 5.5 -

Burak: 6.0 -

ARSENAL

Almunia: 8.5 -
Despite picking the ball out on two ocassions, he produced a great captain's performance. Made three saves from one on one encounters. A reliable sticksman.

Eboue: 7.5 -
His defensive duties are questionable judging from tonight's performance as he left far too room when he went forward. He did however make a great goal-line clearance, and contributed well to Arsenal's dynamism going forward, assisted Ramsey especially well for Arsenal's fifth.

Song: 7.5 -
A much better performance than Everton's shocking display. Finished a great move with his right foot.

Silvestre: 7.0 -
At times had poor positional sense.

Clichy: 8.0 -
Great trickery on the left side of defence. Good composure. If there is one thing Arsene Wenger can do it is produce, train, and mould superb left backs.

Diaby: 9.0 -
Outstanding! Amazing feet. This time last year it looked like he had no left foot. Then he is deployed on that flank and constantly criticised, but it has done his game the world of good as his footwork is exquisite. Good goal.

Fabregas: 8.0 -
Played the quarterback role with good effect. His long range passing was spot on and he began many a sound Arsenal move.

Denilson: 7.5 -
Passed well and will have enjoyed his performance. Combined well with Fabregas in attempting to manufacture late goals.

Walcott: 8.0 -
Great pace - again. Had Roberto Carlos - a player whose poster he probably had on his wall as a kid - in his pocket. Doubled the Gunners' advantage within seconds of Adebayor's first.

Nasri: 6.5 -
Didn't play well. Was mugged on a lot of ocassions. His first substandard performance in an Arsenal shirt.

Adebayor: 7.5 -
Held the ball up well and provided ample time for his midfield to join him in attack. Roamed the forward line. Opened Arsenal's account on the 11th minute and silenced the Istanbul atmosphere.

Substitutes:

Ramsey: 7.0 -
A cameo performance was capped with a goal. Attempted audacious passes.

Djourou: 6.0 -

Tujuh Gol Di Sukru Sorkoglu...

Teror Arsenal dimulai sejak awal pertandingan.

Meski demkikan, semangat anak asuh Wenger masih membara. Terbukti tiga menit berselang, Abou Diaby berhasil memperbesar jarak dengan melesakkan gol, menjadikan Arsenal unggul 3-1. Keadaan tetap bertahan hingga turun minum.

Susunan Pemain:
Fenerbahce: Volkan Demirel, Edu Dracena, Diego Lugano, Roberto Carlos, Gokhan Gonul (Burak Yilmaz 80), Selcuk Sahin, Claudio Maldonado (Ali Bilgin 52), Daniel Guiza, Alex, Ugur Boral, Semih Senturk

Arsenal: Manuel Almunia, Mikael Silvestre, Alexandre Song, Gael Clichy, Emmanuel Eboue, Denilson, Cesc Fabregas, Samir Nasri, Theo Walcott (Johan Djourou 84), Emmanuel Adebayor (Carlos Vela 86), Abou Diaby (Aaron Ramsey 73).

JUVENTUS

Manniger – 6: Didn’t have too many saves to make and that is testament to how solid his defenders infront of him were.

Grygera – 7: Charged forward with enthusiasm early in the game, but stayed back in his own half once the match was sewn up. Did allow Heinze to sneak in behind him to deliver the cross for
Madrid’s goal.

Chiellini – 8.5: Ever present at the back. Shadowed Higuaín closely and was still available to cut out any potentially harmful balls into the box.

Legrottaglie – 6: So good was Chiellini that Legro didn’t need to do much but make up the numbers at the back. Had to be taken off at the break with an injury.

Molinaro – 7: Never did step out of his own half. Very conservative and kept it very tight at the back. Had to stay sharp in the closing stages to keep a tight leash on Robben.

Marchionni 6: Did not see much of him. Quietly pulled the strings from midfield to launch whatever counter-attacking opportunity Juve had.

Sissoko – 8.5: Covered more territory than any other player on the pitch. Won every tackle, recovered every ball, got stuck in to every challenge. Without doubt a Man of the Match performance.

Marchisio – 5.5: A subdued performance but that was his duty… the supporting act to Sissoko. Had to leave the pitch in the first half after colliding with the Malian.

Nedvěd – 7: Hung quietly down the left flank and happily waited for the ball to come to him. Provided the pin-point cross for Amauri to head in the second goal.

Del Piero – 7: Cannavaro warned that a player like Alex could score from anywhere, anytime and he did just that with a superb strike to open scoring. Faded away towards the end of the game but no one would really care about that, considering the goal he scored.

Amauri – 7.5: Made the assist for the first goal and got one of his own and a crucial one, too, it proved to be at the end. A constant menace to the Madrid backline, although he didn’t test Casillas too much.

Substitutes:

Salihamidžić 6: Played a more advanced, attacking role than the man he replaced, Marchisio. Tried to conjure a few tricks with his fancy footwork put failed miserably.

Mellberg 5.5: Very casual in his defending. Constantly left players unmarked.

Iaquinta – 5: Barely had a meaningful touch of the ball in the ten minutes he was on.

REAL MADRID

Casillas – 5.5: Had a clear, unblocked view of Del Piero’s shot and even though it was coming at speed with a lot of swerve, he should have attempted a diving save.

Sergio Ramos – 6: Looked very nervous in the opening exchanges. Gradually grew into the game with a few threatening runs into the opposition box but still not his usual bullish self.

Cannavaro – 5: His slack marking allowed Del Piero to slip away from his sight to score the pivotal opener. Wasn’t easy for him to play in this sort of environment but he did not make any further glaring mistakes after the first goal.

Pepe – 5: Carelessly gave away the ball deep in his own half that led to the second goal. Other than that, he looked solid in the air and he wasn’t afraid to roam forward to help out in attack.

Heinze – 6: Caught hideously out of position several times and left holes down his flank. Left Amauri completely unmarked at the back post. He did atone for that by supplying the cross for Van Nistelrooy’s goal.

Sneijder – 7: Ran a lot in the first half but saw little of the ball. Made a massive improvement in the second and bombarded the Juve goal with shots and crosses.

Gago – 6.5: Like Sissoko, he ran tireless to clean up in midfield. But he couldn’t provide that extra spark in attack like he normally would during those times of desperation.

Van der Vaart – 5.5: Had a number of long range efforts come close… but his deliveries were a huge let-down. His inability to run past and draw out defenders was his biggest weakness. Ran out of steam in the second half.

Higuaín – 5: Just could not get into the game. Shackled tightly by Chiellini and never allowed an inch of space to run.

Van Nistelrooy 6.5: Completely out of tune. Did almost nothing for an entire hour but still managed to pop up with the consolation goal with a typical bullet of a header.

Raúl – 5.5: The most active of the three forwards but even then, he was merely running like a headless chicken. Never got the service and had to drop down to find the ball on his own.

Substitutes:

Robben – 6.5: Made an immediate impact upon coming on. Gave the team more width and speed. Would have been a certain starter had it not been for his lack of fitness.

Drenthe – 5: Was supposed to bring the same energy and spark on the other side of the flank, but he never had the confidence to run with the ball.

Sang Nyonya Besar Kembali Kedalam Trek...

Susunan Pemain:

Juventus: Alex Manninger, Giorgio Chiellini, Nicola Leggrottaglie (Olof Mellberg 45), Christian Molinaro, Zdenek Grygera, Claudio Marchisio (Hasan Salihamidzic 38), Mohammed Sissoko, Pavel Nedved, Marco Marchionni, Alessandro Del Piero, Amauri Carvalho (Vincenzo Iaquinta 78).

Real Madrid: Iker Casillas, Fabio Cannavaro, Pepe, Gabriel Heinze, Sergio Ramos, Fernando Gago, Wesley Sneijder, Rafael Van der Vaart (Royston Drenthe 76), Raul, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Gonzalo Higuain (Arjen Robben 54).

Edwin van der Sar - 7: Getting back to his best after a few disappointing performances at the end of last season and the beginning of this campaign. Made two smart saves in the first half and was reliable when called upon.

Gary Neville – 6: Still finding his feet after a long spell on the sidelines, Neville was solid and did his best to get up and down the right-hand side. Looked tired and was replaced by Brown in the second period.

Nemanja Vidic – 7: Steady and solid, Vidic led a United back-line which did not have too much work to do at Old Trafford this evening.

Jonny Evans - 7: Stepped in for Ferdinand and turned in a reliable display. Improving in every game for United and showing signs that he has as bright future at the top level.

John O’Shea – 7: The versatile O’Shea played well at left-back. He made the first goal after making something out of Nani’s near post corner and had some nice touches in possession throughout the match.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 7: Ronaldo is still some way from last season’s form, but he produced a lively display on the right wing. Key to most of United’s early attacks, his second half free-kick produced Berbatov and United’s second goal after Boruc parried the powerful effort into the Bulgarian’s stride.

Darren Fletcher – 6: Another steady performance from the Scotland midfielder, good in possession and always keen to get involved. Should have scored at the end of the first half but blazed an excellent chance over the crossbar.

Anderson – 6: A neat and tidy performance from Anderson. Not involved directly in any of the goals but rarely gave the ball away and consistently ensured the side’s other flair players saw plenty of the ball.

Nani – 7: Started slowly, but grew as the game progressed. His corner led to United’s opener and he was full of energy throughout the ninety minutes, central in many United attacks and putting some good balls into the box.

Wayne Rooney – 8: On fire at the moment, Rooney was desperate to be involved and is showing huge levels of confidence. After countless efforts on goal and with an effort wrongly ruled out for offside the England striker was not to be denied and he sealed the win with a well-placed third goal.

Dimitar Berbatov – 8: Berbatov is now coming into his own at Old Trafford. Scored two goals and although replays showed they should both have been ruled offside, he was in the right places at the right times and made no mistakes with his finishing. Also did a lot of all-round work for the team.

Substitutions:

Tevez – 7: Came on full of energy and determination after his recent frustration. Laid on the third goal for Rooney. Brown - 6: Did not have much work to do as he came on at right-back with Celtic hardly pressing forward. Park – n/a: On for the last ten minutes to give Ronaldo a breather.

Celtic

Artur Boruc - 4: It has been an inconsistent start to the season from Boruc and he put in a poor performance tonight. Should have done better with Ronaldo’s free-kick, but only parried which allowed Berbatov to tap the ball home. Also fumbled later in the half and Rooney almost punished him.

Mark Wilson - 5: Was given a torrid time by Ronaldo and Nani on occasions and still doesn’t look fully fit. Didn’t feature at all in an attacking sense, although it must be said, neither did his team for the whole second half.

Stephen McManus – 6: Despite not being directly at fault for any of the goals, McManus and his defensive colleagues were unable to prevent United from easing to victory.

Glenn Loovens - 6: Initially Loovens impressed me and for much of the game he looked composed and solid against United’s star-studded attack. He had a lapse when giving Rooney too much space for the third goal however, and at this level you get punished.

Lee Naylor - 6: Naylor put in a decent shift. He worked hard to get up and down the left to offer support and he did his best to curtail the efforts of Nani and Ronaldo, not a task any full-back in world football looks forward to.

Shunsuke Nakamura – 6: When Nakamura got on the ball he looked like the most likely player to create something for the Celts. Some neat passes when Celtic had their strong start early on, but like his team, faded as the game progressed.

Scott Brown - 4: Brown’s contribution to the ninety minutes did not feature much more than consistently fouling United’s players as they got close to the Celtic penalty area. His foul on Anderson led to the second goal and quite how he managed to avoid a yellow card for persistent fouling is beyond me.

Gary Caldwell - 7: A confident performance from Caldwell in the midfield holding role. Proved to be an excellent asset breaking up the play in front of the back four and was neat and tidy in possession. Probably Celtic’s best player, which says a lot for their all-round performance.

Barry Robson - 5: Anonymous throughout the game. Couldn’t get on the ball and spent the majority of the match behind the ball as United dictated proceedings for two-thirds of the ninety minutes.

Aiden McGeady - 6: Lively early on when the Bhoys started strongly. Tested Van der Sar with a good strike from the edge of the box and was not overawed by the occasion.

Scott McDonald – 5: Worked doggedly on his own up front but was left without any service or support from his team-mates.

Substitutions:

Maloney – 5: Was unable to influence proceedings, a surprise non-starter. Hartley - 5: Main contribution was a petulant foul on Nani. Sheridan – n/a: On for the last ten minutes for the experience.

Man Of The Match: Wayne Rooney.

Berbatov Mulai Nyetel...!

Enam menit berselang sejak dimulainya babak pertama, Berba kembali memaksimalkan bola muntah tepisan Artur Boruc yang mencoba menahan laju tendangan Cristiano Ronaldo.

Susunan Pemain:

Manchester United: Edwin Edwin van der Sar; Gary Neville (Brown '59), Jonny Evans, Nemanja Vidic, John O’Shea; Cristiano Ronaldo (Park '82), Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Nani; Dimitar Berbatov (Tevez '59), Wayne Rooney.

Celtic: Artur Boruc; Mark Wilson, Glenn Loovens, Stephen McManus, Lee Naylor; Shunsuke Nakamura (Hartley '61), Scott Brown, Gary Caldwell, Barry Robson (Maloney '61), Aiden McGeady; Scott McDonald (Sheridan '77)

Juventus travelled to the San Paolo stadium to face Napoli in a classic Serie A fixture. They were looking for their first league victory in almost a month, while 6th placed Napoli were also coming off a 3-2 defeat to Genoa.

Juve coach Claudio Ranieri faced some defensive problems as Jonathan Zebina, Nicola Legrottaglie, and Olof Mellberg, as well as keeper Gianluigi Buffon, were all out injured. Dario Knezevic and Giorgio Chiellini in the center of the defence, with Alex Manninger deputising in goal. Ranieri played with a 4-4-2 formation with captain Alex Del Piero and Amauri up front, while his Napoli colleague Edy Reja with a 3-5-2 line up in which former Bianconero Marcelo Zalayeta and Ezequiel Lavezzi played in attack.

First Half

As expected, there was a huge crowd in the stadium for this match, as is always the case when Napoli face a big side. The first chances were for the home side, who started the game brightly and seemed to benefit from the boisterous home crowd.

In the 5th minute, midfielder Christian Maggio played in a good cross for Michele Contini, who sent in a low cross from inside the area for Zalayeta, but it was just out of the striker’s reach.

Juve responded immediately at the other end, as Hasan Salihamidzic made a good run towards the byline and played the ball in for Christian Poulse, whose shot deflected off Fabiano Santacroce but forced Gennaro Iezzo to make a great diving save (7’).

Around the quarter hour mark, the old Del Piero-Nedved connection conjured up a couple of chances for Juve, as first the captain played the ball back to the Golden Ball winner, who had a chance to shoot from the edge of the area, but his effort sailed high over the crossbar (14’).

A minute later, Nedved made a good run at the Napoli defence and played a sliding pass to Del Piero, but Santacroce cleared the danger with a fine tackle.

A big chance came in the 23rd minute, when Del Piero sent in a perfect cross for Amauri, but the Brazilian striker headed the ball wide from a great position. A similar chance came four minutes later for Napoli, when Marek Hamsik headed the ball down and forced Manninger into an impressive diving save (27’).

Around ten minutes later, Del Piero came close to opening the score with one of his trademark free kicks, given for a foul by Paolo Cannavaro on Amauri, which curled nicely around the wall only for Iezzo to tip the ball over the crossbar.

There were no more chances in the remainder of a somewhat disappointing first half.

Second Half

The start of the second half wasn’t promising, as both sides made a lot of mistakes and fired blanks left and right.

The first half-chance came in the 58th minute, when Maggio made a good run, beating two defenders and sending in a dangerous low cross inside the area, which Manninger cleared away with his feet.

Two minutes later, Juve had the ball in the net. It was a well taken strike by Amauri, who met a left-wing cross by Poulsen perfectly and volleyed it past Iezzo, making it 1-0 to the visitors in the 60th minute.

This goal made the match come alive, and it took only four minutes for the Azzurri to get an equaliser. Manuele Blasi received the ball on the right wing and sent in a cross that Hamsik, who hadn’t had a great match until that point, headed past a hapless Manninger (64’).

The match remained intense after this goal, but both sides played very cautiously as they seemed content with the 1-1 tie. However, a mistake by Juve defender Dario Knezevic allowed Napoli to take the lead out of nothing, as his clearence bounced to Lavezzi, who had no hesitation and pulled the trigger, making it 2-1 and turning the match on its head 11 minutes before full time.

In the last ten minutes, Juve looked out of sorts as they were not expecting to concede a second, and Ranieri decided to bring in starlet Sebastian Giovinco in the hope of drawing level. However, a few minutes after Lavezzi’s goal, it was the home side who came close again, as in the 83rd minute Hamsik volleyed a shot just over the crossbar from a dangerous position.

Juve’s last chance came on a dead ball situation, as defender Giorgio Chiellini headed the ball wide on a free kick by Giovinco. In injury time, however, the home side could have the score bigger as a lob by German Denis went just over the bar.

This was the second straight defeat for Claudio Ranieri's team following the 2-1 reverse at home against Palermo, while Napoli lived up to their terrific start to the season. Ranieri will no doubt be blamed for making the odd decision of replacing Del Piero with defender De Ceglie 20 minutes from the end.

With this victory Napoli momentarily leap to the top of the table with 14 points, while Juventus are 11th with 9 points.

Tumbang, Ranierri Nyantai...

Fiorentina vs Reggina 3-0, Highlight Liga Italia 2008, week 7

highlight soccer video, serie A Italia 2008,Fiorentina vs Reggina 3-0
cuplikan pertandingan sepakbola liga Italia 2008, pekan 7,Fiorentina vs Reggina 3-0

Reggina got the game started and they looked a little shaky early on. The Calabrian side have been struggling and they are desperate for points. Fiorentina on the other hand have been blowing hot and cold, but they started this game well. Santana fed Pazzini in the first minute but the hit-man was wrongly flagged offside. Nevio Orlandi’s side was lucky to escape as Pazzini was through on goal and he would have scored.

Alberto Gilardino started this one on the bench with, perhaps, the Champions League in mind but he was hardly missed though as Pazzini was being the nuisance up front. Jovetic was playing just behind and he was outstanding, putting pinpoint passes for fun. Reggina hardly had a look in as the Viola created all the play. Chances were few and far between but to their credit, the relegation strugglers did put the home side in difficulty as Viggiani pulled the strings.

At times Fiorentina would take their feet off the gas and this allowed the Amaranto, who were playing in their white strip, to enjoy possession and pass their way around. With Adrian Mutu still out with injury, Jovetic took over free kick duties but his effort was poor following Cirillo’s foul on Pazzini. Seconds later Kuzmanovic played a delightful angled ball into the path of Pazzini but he was late coming in and just missed contact.

Jovetic was in inspirational form as he left Lanzaro for dead following Comotto’s cross but the Montenegrin’s strike was charged down by Cirillo. Both teams fought hard but neither had the cutting edge up front. La Viola always looked more likely to score but they panicked in the final third. Reggina soon settled down and began to find their rhythm although at times both sides played some uninspiring football. Jovetic was by far the best player on the pitch and he stung Campagnolo’s hands with a powerful drive. It was a rocket of a shot but the Reggina man did well to stop it hitting the back of the net.

The Calabrian’s hardly created any chances worthy of mention as the Tuscan side dealt with every threat comfortably. Gobbi came closest for Fiorenina when he was set up by Jovetic but his powerful drive zoomed just over the cross bar as Cesare Prandelli’s side kept banging on the door. Things got worse for Reggina after Santana was hacked by Campagnolo in the box. The goalkeeper was sent off and a penalty was given. It was rather harsh. Pazzini stepped and calmly slotted home by sending substitute goalkeeper Puggioni the wrong way. Reggina had no reply as the home side went into the break a goal to the good.

Second Half

The Viola began the second half where they left off and it was Kuzmanovic who tested Puggioni straight away as he tried his luck from distance with a powerful effort. The Calabrian’s were under the cosh again and they knew they had their work cut out. It was always going to be tough with ten men and Orlandi knew it as he jumped around the dug out in frustration, thinking about what might have been if things were level on the pitch.

Things almost got worse for the coach when Jovetic raced through only to scuff his shot wide as he left Cirillo chasing thin air. Fiorentina were toying with their opponents as they kept the ball well and made Reggina chase hard. The gap in class was clear to see as the away side struggled. The Amaranto had lost their previous three away games coming into this one and they were heading for their fourth away loss of term. Just one goal scored on the road this term and it didn’t look like they would get another against the Viola.

To their credit, the Reggio Calabria side battled away and did what they could. Lanzaro made he most of some space down on the right and found Cozza unmarked in the box but the playmaker’s header went over the bar. Frey hardly moved as the Viola escaped unscathed.

Fiorentina stepped off the gas and Reggina sent the warning shots but they couldn’t pull one back as the numerical disadvantage showed. Supersub Alberto Gilardino made sure of the points on 75 minutes to grab his fifth goal of the season as he beat the offside trap and beat Puggioni with an exemplary finish following Montolivo’s excellent pass. The Italian internationals combined well to ensure their side picked up the win they deserved.

The scoring did not stop there though as the Viola grabbed a third. Gilardino bagged his brace as a howler from Puggioni allowed the Italian to slot home into an unguarded net. The Reggina 'Keeper came, saw but never conquered the long ball as it went over him in an calamity of a mistake.

Teams Fiorentina 4-3-3: Frey, Comotto, Gamberini, Dainelli, Gobbi, Donadel, Felipe Melo, Kuzmanovic(Montolivo), Santana, Pazzini(Gilardino), Jovetic(Osvaldo).

Reggina 4-3-2-1: Campagnolo, Lanzaro, Cirillo, Santos, Costa, Vigiani(Puggioni), Barreto, Carmona, Brienza, Cozza(Di Gennaro), Rakic(Ceravolo).

Goals: Pazzini, Gilardino x 2.

There was a dramatic finish at the Calderon on Saturday night, as Real Madrid inficted yet another heart-wrenching defeat on their cross town rivals.

Atletico welcomed back Diego Forlan to partner a tired Kun Aguero up front, while Javier Aguirre decided to pack the centre of his midfield in a bid to nullify Real Madrid’s attacking threat.

Los Blancos, meanwhile, brought Marcelo and Wesley Sneijder in, while going for a trident of Higuain, Raul and Van Nistelrooy up front.

First Half

Much of the build-up to the match had been spent emphasizing the fact that Atleti had not beaten their bitter rivals at home for nine years. Could it get much worse? After approximately thirty-five seconds, Ruud Van Nistelrooy shattered the hopes and dreams of the Vicente Calderon faithful before they had found their seats, rifling a shot into the bottom corner from the left flank from about twenty-five yards. While it was a decent effort, Leo Franco should not have been beaten at his near post.

Having virtually scored from the kick-off, Real Madrid nearly repeated the trick, but Sneijder’s shot cannoned back off the bar. It looked as though Los Blancos could wrap up the match in the opening exchanges, but Atleti managed to hold off their early advances. However, they appeared toothless in attack, with Aguero seeming on his own up front, considerably lacking in support from his midfield. They were mostly reduced to long shots, such as a low effort by Pernia that Casillas tipped around the post. It was their opponents, however, who created the next significant opening.

Sneijder flighted a corner into the box, to be volleyed by Cannavaro. Leo Franco parried the ball straight into the path of Van Nistelrooy (who else?), who tapped the ball in from a couple of yards. His celebrations were short-lived, however, as he looked across to see the linesman’s flag raised high in the air. Replays suggested the Dutchman might have been a bit hard done by. The trend continued when Raul was released on the half hour, rounded the keeper and was ready to slot home when the Rojiblancos' best friend waved his flag again. Again, it was a marginal, but ultimately wrong decision. However, it was all about to get much worse for Atletico.

A stray elbow from Perea left Wesley Sneijder with a bleeding nose, and he was duly sent off. He had been booked before, but that was irrelevant as it was a straight red. Despite half time being imminent, Aguirre absolutely had to make a change, as he bought Antonio Lopez on for Raul Garcia to shore up the defence and limit the damage before the break. But just as things looked as though they couldn’t get crazier, they did. Ruud Van Nistelrooy executed a typically clumsy striker’s tackle on Maniche, and was sent off for his troubles. While it was undoubtedly a rash challenge, the forward could justifiably feel a bit hard done by the refereeing team, given the earlier disallowed goal as well.

Surprisingly, there were no more flashpoints before the interval, leaving the ten men on each side to walk into the sheds and reflect on a bizarre opening period.

Second Half

Javier Aguirre introduced some much-needed width into the game at half time, sending on Simao for Pernia. The second half began at the same frantic pace as the first, with the extra space on offer resulting in a true end-to-end encounter. The first major incident came on fifty minutes when Leo Franco pulled of a double save from Higuain and De La Red. Soon afterwards, Aguero found himself one on one with Casillas, but sent his shot wide.

The match continued at the same pace but both sides appeared to lack the killer instinct up front, and despite the chances, a goal seemed far from inevitable. Possibly the most disappointing aspect of the match was the shocking delivery from set pieces, from both sides. In a bid to seal the match, Bernd Schuster sent out Rafael Van der Vaart for compatriot Wesley Sneijder. Aguirre responded by throwing on Luis Garcia for Ujfalusi, leaving Atleti with just two genuine defenders on the pitch. While Atleti began to marginally dominate possession, they were still ultimately relying on Aguero’s brilliance for a goal. The little Argentinean was lively as always, but his final decisions left a lot to be desired.

With barely five minutes remaining, Pepe, who had arguably been the best player on the park, proved just how valuable he is to Real Madrid, executing a superb block to stop Aguero’s goal bound shot, after Cannavaro had slipped in the box. Schuster responded to the pressure by sending Royston Drenthe on for Raul, a move theoretically designed to strengthen the defence. It was Madrid’s attack, however, that almost sealed the deal, with Higuain and Van der Vaart forcing Leo Franco into yet another double save.

It appeared to be a costly miss, as the dramatic encounter took another twist at the beginning of stoppage time. Atleti won a free kick on the edge of the box, and they finally made one count, with half time substitute Simao firing the ball in, leaving Casillas helpless. The Portuguese was booked for taking his shirt off in celebration, but it was well worth it.

The celebrations were short-lived, however, as Atletico underwent yet another spectacular capitulation against their arch enemy. On ninety-five minutes, with less than a minute to go, Drenthe went down in the box after a challenge from Heitinga, and referee Clos Gomez pointed to the spot. Gonzalo Higuain stepped up and made no mistake under intense pressure, despite Leo Franco getting a hand to the shot.

It was a cruel but familiar ending for Atleti, whose fans will be wondering if they will ever see their team beat Real Madrid at the Calderon in their lifetime.

Emile Heskey has grabbed the headlines for his England displays and is even linked with a transfer to the Reds, a move that has surprised Rafa Benitez, but he would have to wait for a return as he was ruled out of action for the afternoon kick-off.

Amr Zaki has been in imperious and emphatic form for Latic side Wigan Athletic, and Liverpool will have to be wary of the Egyptian threat.

Wigan glovesman Chris Kirkland may breathe a sigh of relief as key 'Pool striker Fernando Torres' absence was confirmed.

FIRST HALF

Chelsea thrashed Middlesbrough 5-0 earlier in the day so if Liverpool wanted to maintain their early pace with last year's league runners up then a home win would be mandatory.

The home side were searching for their fifth successive win, and were firm favourites for the tie, but there were distinct murmurs of an upset.

The opening fifteen minutes saw relative little action in either goals, but Albert Riera retained his promising form of late as he hugged the touchline and threatened from the wide areas.

Frenchman Kapo almost broke the deadlock 23 minutes. Reina was forced into a save that was pounced on by Kapo but reliable Jamie Carragher was there to block.

Six minutes later Amr Zaki took advantage of some confusion between Agger and Reina and the powerful Egyptian - likened to Alan Shearer - neatly slotted the ball home.

Liverpool begin to ease their way back into the game as the second half draws to a close and they finally find their equaliser when Agger - making amends for his earlier mistake that gifted Zaki a goal - set up Dirk Kuyt who smashed the ball into the net.

On the 44th minute Kirkland denies Kuyt a chance to give Liverpool the lead going into the break but only moments later Zaki scores an outrageous goal after good play from Valencia.

SECOND HALF

Riera begins the second half brightly and attempts to level the scoreline with a glanced header, but Titus Bramble is there to intercept.

Ten minutes later Zaki had the opportune moment to claim his first Premier League hat-trick but his strike fails to thwart Reina.

Gerrard was unusually quiet thus far in the game, especially considering these are the conditions that the scouse skipper usually thrives, and with just over 30 minutes remaining he tries a long drive but the ball is high and wide.

On the 72nd minute a Steven Gerrard free kick is whiskers away from the frame of the goal and Liverpool were getting closer and closer, but time was not on their side.

The home side were gifted a lifeline though as Valencia saw red for a second bookable offence as he lunged in on Alonso.

Then, five minutes later, the lively Riera capped his performance with a goal and for the first time in a Reds shirt he picked the ball out of the net and Liverpool looked good for their comeback.

Dirk Kuyt, often criticised for not scoring enough, sealed the win five minutes from time and the Latics, who had taken the lead twice, looked to go home empty handed.

LINE UPS

Liverpool: Reina - Dossena; Agger; Carragher; Arbeloa - Riera; Gerrard; Alonso; Pennant - Kuyt; Keane.

Wigan: Kirkland - Scharner; Bramble; Melchiot; Figueroa - Valencia; Palacios; Cattermole; Kapo; Ridder - Zaki.

Liverpool Raih kemenangan Tipis

Liverpool sendiri tampil menekan sejak peluit dimulainya pertandingan dibunyikan.

Memasuki babak kedua, Liverpool meningkatkan daya gempurnya.

Susunan Pemain:
Liverpool: Reina, Agger, Carragher, Dossena (El Zhar 76), Arbeloa (Benayoun 77), Alonso, Gerrard, Riera, Pennant, Keane (Hyypia 94), Kuyt.

Wigan Athletic: Kirkland, Bramble, Scharner, Figueroa, Melchiot, Kapo (Brown 82), Cattermole, Palacios (Koumas 90), De Ridder (Kilbane 77), Valencia, Zaki.
