Silvestre : Arsenal Young But Not Stupid !

Defender Mikaël Silvestre is one of the senior voices in a very young Arsenal squad.

That squad was even younger on Tuesday evening as the baby-faced second string failed to see off Championship side Burnley in the Carling Cup quarter-finals.

Arsene Wenger's youth spurned some glorious opportunities at Turf Moor and were left red-faced by the Clarets, for whom Kevin McDonald hit a killer brace.

Frenchman Silvestre, a summer signing from Manchester United, only hopes that Wenger's star pupils can learn quickly and put the botched chemistry experiment behind them.

"You have got to learn," Silvestre groaned.

"The youngsters? They should have won. It was an opportunity for them to express themselves.

"It's a shame. We had chances, but a lack of concentration cost us two goals.

"We lost the game and you can see that it will hurt for a while.

"If we are not stupid, then we won't do the same again."

It may be a while before Wenger decides to throw all his young charges onto the field at once, however.
